Lexington sweeps Irmo, Gray Collegiate opens season with victory

Defending Class 2A champion Gray Collegiate opened the 2018-19 season with a dominating performance at the Battle of the Rock Friday night.

The War Eagles defeated Northwood Temple 90-63 as five players scored in double figures. Jalil Robinson had a team-high 23 points and 8 rebounds, followed by Tommy Bruner with 15, Chase McDuffie with 14, Jalen DeLoach with 13 points and 9 rebounds and Khalil Robinson with 12.

“Great team effort and our bench is deep,” GCA head coach Dion Bethea said. “It’s going to be a fun season.”

It was the 17th consecutive victory dating back to last season for Gray Collegiate, which has also won its last 20 games against Palmetto State teams.

Up next is the Bojangles’ Bash at W.J. Keenan High School on Dec. 7. The War Eagles will open against Aspire Academy at 5 p.m. and face Cardinal Newman the following night.

 

Lexington 53, Irmo 37

Mason Carver scored 18 points, Jonathan Corley had 16 and Will Edwards connected on 4, 3-pointers for 12 points as the Wildcats defeated the 10th-ranked Yellow Jackets.

Lexington (6-1) led 37-14 at halftime.

Trevez Caldwell led Irmo with 17 points.

 

Chapin 52, Mid-Carolina 35

Westwood 82, Airport 54 

Nanders Lawrence scored 22 points and R.J. Howell added 10 as the Eagles fell to third-ranked Westwood.

Madison Dipoco led the Lady Yellow Jackets with 14 points, Maliyah Mason had 12 and Shaniece Jones finished with 10.
