The quest for a 4th South Carolina American Legion title in 7 years ended for Chapin/Newberry Post 193/24 Friday at Stevens Field.
Greer Post 115 defeated the defending state champions 9-5 in the deciding game of the Best-of-5 Upper State playoff series. It will open a 3rd round Best-of-5 series starting Monday against Greenwood, a 2-1 winner over Rock Hill in 8 innings Friday, for a berth in the state tournament at Segra Park in Columbia.
Chapin/Newberry held an early 2-1 lead thanks to solo home runs in the Top 5th by Kelson Palmer and Brady Koosa off starter Benjamin Thornton. Greer (15-6) responded with 8 runs and 3 home runs over the next 2 innings.
Collin Fowler and Noah Mitchell each had 3-run homers and Clayton Wilson had a 2-run shot for his 3rd homer of the series.
Chapin/Newberry rallied in the top 7th with an RBI single by Bryce Medlock and Blair Rogers scoring on a passed ball with 1 out. Greer's Mitchell got the final 2 outs in relief on a popout by Jalen McDuffie and strikeout of Jackie Stroud.
Post 193/24 ends the season with a 11-14 mark.
