Local golfers shine

The Tri-County’s 2018 All Star team has been established and there were some exciting finishes in the SCJGA Hootie Summer Series’ final event.
Before elaborating and Recognizing the local juniors, amateur local superstar Lauren Stephenson of Lexington High School once again made it to the semifinals of the 2018 US Women’s Amateur this past weekend in Nashville, Tenn.
In professional golf, the world’s number-one player and Dutch Fork High School graduate Dustin Johnson once again was in contention in the season’s final golf major, the PGA Championship.  Unfortunately, his weekend was not spectacular and Brooks Koepka won his second major of the year and made a strong statement for Player of the Year honors heading into the playoffs.
The weekends biggest golf story  may be the fact that the great Tiger Woods made a late Sunday charge. He shot a final round 64 but still came up two shots short of the winning score of Koepka.
Woods finished second alone and his best major performance in many years.
Another significant weekend golf event occurred that is interesting and a step in a growing direction. The South Carolina Womens Golf Association held the very first South Carolina Women’s Open at Seabrook Island Golf Club.
Amira Alexander from Atlanta took the first place professional trophy and Sydney Legacy from Lexington placed second. Dawn Woodward of Greer won the amateur division.
The most unique feature about the SCJGA Tri- County All-Star team is it’s a team established purely on player performance. This means there are no coaches picks or votes to make this team.
The players have to earn their way through their performance on the golf course. Each week,  points are awarded based on the position they placed. These points are accumulated throughout the entire summer and the players leading the points categories represent the chapter.
The players earn 25 points for 1st, 20 for 2nd, 16 for 3rd, 13 for 4th and 10 for 5th. Places 6-10 earn 5 points, and after earn 3 points. The men’s and women’s golf Association sponsor this summer finale feeding the players and their families.  Congratulations to these players from earning their way on to the All Star Team.
