2nd ranked Lexington moved a step closer to a playoff berth following Monday’s 9-1 win at Chapin.
Cole Long went 3-4 with 3 RBI and struck out 6 in 5 innings for the win. Chapin’s Anson Merrick had 6 strikeouts, but allowed 11 hits in the loss.
Wells Sykes led off the game with a single and moved to 3rd on Ryan Toll’s double. He then scored on an infield error and Toll was brought home on Blake Knight’s sacrifice fly.
A 2-out RBI single by Sykes scored Gage Goodwin to put Lexington (14-3, 6-1) up 3-0 in the Top 2nd. In the 3rd, Knight picked up his 2nd RBI with a single to score Nathan Hall and Long belted a 2-run single to make it 6-0. In the Top 5th, Long belted an RBI single and Toll added a 2-run single to make it 9-0.
Chapin (8-9, 1-6) scored its lone run in the Bottom 5th when an error at catcher enabled Gavin McMillion to reach homeplate. Goodwin pitched a scoreless final 2 innings of relief.
Lexington can clinch a playoff berth with a victory Thursday at home against Chapin.
River Bluff 5, White Knoll 2
Todd Hudson hit a 3-run homer and Ethan Lebron struck out 10 and allowed just 1 hit for the Gators (10-7, 2-5).
An infield error enabled Kelvin Ramsey to score to put White Knoll up 1-0. The Gators answered in the Top 3rd when Hudson cleared the bases with his home run.
Reign Lybrand’s RBI sacrifice fly made it 3-2 in the Bottom 3rd. River Bluff picked up 2 runs in the Top 4th as Zach Cowart scored on a wild pitch and Thomas Powell hit an RBI double.
Cowart pitched the final inning to close out the victory.
The 2 teams meet again Thursday in The Swamp.
Airport 11, Brookland-Cayce 1
A 8-run 1st inning aided by 5 hit batsmen lifted the Eagles past the archrival Bearcats.
Airport scored 3 runs with players getting hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, 2 runs off an error on a flyball by Bruno Stone, a run off a wild pitch, a RBI walk by Blake Palyok and an RBI single by Corbin Wright.
An RBI fielder’s choice by Wright made it 9-0. Brookland-Cayce got on the board on a wild pitch in the Top 3rd, but Airport answered back with 2 runs in the bottom half of the inning on RBI singles by Palyok and Bryce Rucker.
A 2-run single by Skylar King in the Top 4th made it 11-3. Palyok and Rucker responded again with RBI singles in the Bottom 5th to close out the game on the mercy rule.
Irmo 7, Westwood 6
JJ Bruce and Austin Hinson each drove in 2 runs and Julian Scott had 2 hits to lead the Yellow Jackets (6-9, 3-5).
SOFTBALL
Pelion 5, Edisto 1
The Lady Panthers clinched the Region 5-2A title and remained without a loss following Monday’s victory.
Pelion (11-0-1, 6-0) travels to Cordova Thursday to face the Lady Cougars.
Irmo 10, Westwood 9
Grace Huffman and Mehure Lewis both had 2 hits and Mekayla Davis and Meahure Lewis each had 2 RBI to lead the Lady Yellow Jackets.
Davis had a 2-run homer and Lewis hit a solo home run. Emasue Kay struck out 5 in 6 innings of relief.
BOYS SOCCER
Chapin 8, White Knoll 0
The top-ranked Eagles remained undefeated on the season as they moved to within a victory of clinching a playoff berth.
Chapin (12-0, 5-0) plays host Friday to River Bluff, who visits White Knoll (5-11-1, 0-5) Wednesday.
Dutch Fork 1, River Bluff 1 (Dutch Fork wins on PKs 5-4)
The Silver Foxes upended the 3rd ranked Gators, who tied the match in regulation with less than a minute left.
Dutch Fork (5-5, 3-4) closes out Region 5-5A play Friday at home against Lexington. The Gators (9-2, 2-2) visit White Knoll Wednesday.
Lexington 5, Augusta Prep 0
The 4th ranked Wildcats get a home shutout in Monday’s non-region contest.
Up next for Lexington (15-2, 4-2) is Dutch Fork Friday at home.
