North-South All-Star Classic, NIKE Palmetto Cup are latest sports cancellations

Start of S.C. Dixie Youth Baseball delayed until April 4

The list of sporting events adversely affected by concerns over the conoravirus in Chronicle County continues to grow.

On Friday, both the NIKE Palmetto Cup and North-South All-Star Classic announced the cancellation of their respective events.

In addition, S.C. Dixie Youth Baseball also revealed plans to postpone the start of the regular season to April 4. The league will adjust its regulations for 2020 tournament eligibility as necessary.

Set for April 6-8 at Saluda Shoals Park in Irmo, the NIKE Palmetto Cup has featured some of the top soccer teams both in-state and outside South Carolina for over 25 years. This past year marked the 1st time girls’ soccer was included at the Cup in a 6-team field.

Slated for March 21 at Lexington High School, the North-South All-Star Classic would have featured some of the Palmetto State’s top senior basketball players. Dutch Fork head coach and Lexington alumnus Brett Jones was slated to coach the South team, whose roster included Chapin’s Maddux Harrell.

Tauris Watson of 3-time Class 2A champion Gray Collegiate and Ehrial Wagstaff of Irmo were selected to the North rosters. This comes on the heels of the cancellation of the S.C. Hoops Festival at Heathwood Hall that was scheduled for Saturday and the Carolinas Classic on April 28 in Wilmington, N.C.

Irmo girls’ basketball coach Monica Williams was selected as a co-coach for the South Carolina team. Latavian Lawrence of Gray Collegiate was picked to the South Carolina boys’ team.

The S.C. Independent Schools Association has already suspended its spring sports until April 3. Meanwhile, the S.C. High School League will hold a conference call at 1 pm Monday to discuss the matter. The Superintendents’ Executive Committee was also scheduled to hold a teleconference Monday.
