Oklahoma downs Ole MIss in NCAA tournament

Irmo's Devontae Shuler scores 13 in defeat

The last time Devontae Shuler played at Colonial Life Arena, his Ole Miss team came away victorious against the University of South Carolina.

On Friday, the Irmo native and the Rebels were back in Columbia. Instead of the Gamecocks, they faced an Oklahoma team in the 1st round of the NCAA Tournament.

The outcome was far from favorable this time for the visitors. Unable to overcome a fiery start by the Sooners, Ole Miss fell 95-72 to finish the season with a 20-13 record.

Shuler was the team’s 2nd highest scorer, finishing with 13 points, 3 assists and a steal. It was his 5th straight game in double figures and his 56th steal of the season finished him 6th on the Rebels’ single-season list.

However, the Sooners (20-13) jumped out to a 12-0 lead and led as many as 29 points in advancing to Sunday’s second round.

Four players scored in double figures for Oklahoma, led by Christian James and Rashard Odomes with 20 points each, Kristian Doolittle with 19 points, 15 rebounds and 5 assists and Brady Manek with 19 points.

The 23-point loss was the worst loss suffered this season and worst in NCAA tournament play for the Rebels. Nevertheless, Shuler was pleased with the progress made this season and playing before a crowd which included his former high school coach Tim Whipple.

“It was a great journey,” he said. “I didn’t expect us to get into March Madness (with) us having a new coach (Kermit Davis) come in and for me to change my role to play point guard, just that whole thing showed that we have a lot in us that can be proven and be shown. It was a great season. Hopefully, we can get back.”
