Owls rout Blowfish 17-1

Posted

On a night celebrating the 50th anniversary of the moon landing, the Lexington County Blowfish suffered its most lopsided loss of the season.
The Forest City Owls pounded the Blowfish 17-1 in 7 innings Saturday at Lexington County Baseball Stadium. It was the 3rd time this season Lexington County lost under the new Coastal Plain League "Mercy Rule" in which a game can be stopped if a team is losing by 10 or more runs after the 7th inning.
A 7-run 5th inning helped the Owls put the Blowfish in the unenviable position. Todd Elwood had 4 hits and Matthew Lumsden finished with 3 hits and 4 RBI to lead Forest City's 2nd win at Lexington.
While the team collected 16 hits against 5 Lexington County pitchers, Forest City's Caleb Pearson struck out 7 and held the Blowfish to as many hits (3) in 6 innings as they had errors.
River Bluff High School graduate Stephen Kight retired the final 3 Lexington County batters in order to close out the victory for the Owns (21-19, 7-8)
Bailey Gerstner's RBI single in the 2nd was the lone run for Lexington County.
This was the 3rd straight overall loss for Lexington County (14-25, 7-7). The Blowfish have also dropped 4 straight games at home and fell to 5-14 on the season at the stadium.
It will look to snap both skids Monday against Florence in the homestand finale. The two teams are tied for 3rd place in the Coastal Plain League South Division standings after Saturday's losses behind first place Macon and 2nd place Savannah, which both won Saturday.
