The holiday spirit is running high around Pelion High School and with good reason.
Its boys’ basketball team is 10th in the latest S.C. Basketball Coaches Association Class 3A rankings. On Friday, the Panthers improved to 6-1 with a 49-33 win over SCISA school Laurence Manning Academy to win the Pelion Holiday Classic.
Malcolm Davis scored 17 points to lead the Panthers, who were held to just 4 points in the first quarter. They proceeded to outscore the Swampcats 19-10 in the second quarter to take a 23-20 halftime lead.
In the second half, Davis erupted for 16 points and ended out outscoring Laurence Manning over the final 2 periods. He also outscored the Swampcats 9-8 in the 4th quarter.
More impressive for head coach David Smith was his team holding Umer Janson, who had 30 points the night before against Columbia, to 4 points, all in the first half.
“I thought this was probably one of our better defensive efforts of the year which is what I’m pleased about because last night I thought we played horrible defense against Wagener-Salley, giving up 67” Smith said. “Tonight, we gave up 33 to a good team.”
Pelion returns to action Saturday at home against Chapin. It will then compete in the Chapin Invitational starting Dec. 27.
The girls’ Classic final saw Wagener-Salley defeat Columbia 48-45.
