The 3-headed, 6-legged running attack of Airport High School proved dominant in Thursday’s season-opening road victory.

The Eagles routed Dreher 41-7 at Memorial Stadium as the backfield of Bruce Staley and Nanders Lawrence and quarterback Markco Coleman each rushed for 2 touchdowns and helped the team amass close to 450 rushing yards.

The Blue Devils took a 7-0 lead in the 1st quarter as starting quarterback Ryan Campbell lined up at wide receiver and caught a touchdown pass from backup Joshua Drayton.

Airport responded with 41 unanswered points. It started exactly 2 minutes following the Blue Devils’ score as Lawrence took the handoff and burst down the visiting sidelines for a 49-yard touchdown to tie the game after the PAT.

The Eagles collected the first of 4 interceptions on Dreher’s next possession. Following a 59-yard run by Lawrence, Staley scored on a 6-yard run to put Airport ahead for good in the second quarter.

With 5:41 left in the 1st half, Staley scored from 8 yards and Airport extended its lead to 21-7. Gilmore entered the scoring fray with a 3-yard touchdown run to put the Eagles up 27-7 after the missed PAT.

Just before halftime, Airport recovered a fumble on the kickoff. The Eagles drove downfield and Lawrence scored his second touchdown with 33 seconds left to give Airport the 34-7 halftime advantage.

Dreher recovered an onside kick to open the 2nd half. However, the drive stalled when Devin Bowers picked off Campbell’s pass. The Eagles collected another interception, this time by Kenyatta Drafts, to set up their final score on a touchdown run by Gilmore.

The win was the 8th straight in the series for Airport and 9th in the last 10 meetings. Up next for the Eagles is an Aug. 30 road matchup against archrival Brookland-Cayce.

Lawrence, Gilmore, Staley, Airport
