S.C. AMERICAN BASEBALL SUMMER LEAGUE PLAYOFFS - West Columbia, Lexington roll to Game 1 victories

Chapin/Newberry ends 2020 season.

Playing in wet conditions Monday night as now-Hurricane Isaias passed through Chronicle County was challenging enough for West Columbia Post 79 and Lexington Post 7.
It turned out both teams had the number 13 working in their favor as each opened Best-of-3 series in the S.C. American Baseball Summer League tournament.
Over at Midlands Sports Complex, Midlands Division champion West Columbia rolled to a 13-0 victory in 3 innings over Richland Post 215. Incoming rain and wind delayed the contest for about 15 minutes in the final played inning with West Columbia still at bat.
Once play resumed, Richland conceded the game. West Columbia (11-1-1) will now look to wrap up the series at 7 pm Tuesday at Seven Oaks Park in Irmo. It would then play host to Game 1 of a Best-of-3 series with either Florence or Camden to determine the Bracket 2 representative at the SCABSL tournament Aug. 14-16 at Segra Park.
West Columbia managed just 6 hits in the game, 2 by Anon Dodds. It scored 8 runs off 5 Richland errors and 3 runs off 2 walks and a hit batsman with the bases loaded.
Matthew Dooley struck out 6, walked 1 and allowed no hits for the victory.
At Roscoe Frye Field, Lexington opened its Best-of-3 series in dominating fashion.
In rolling past Greenwood 29-7, Post 7 pounded out a season-high 23 hits along with posting 23 unanswered runs.
Post 7 (11-7-1) fell behind early 3-0 and trailed 7-6 in the bottom of the 3rd when it erupted for 13 runs.
The offensive onslaught continued in the 4th inning where Lexington added 8 more runs.
Sparking the high-scoring performance were 5 players who accounted for 3 or more RBI. Chapin graduate Noah Davis and Clemson University signee Ricky Williams of River Bluff each had 4 hits and joined University of South Carolina signee David Cromer of Lexington as all three drove in 4 runs.
Fellow Gators Cam Ferrell and Jacob Lebron drove in 3 runs each and Alex McGinty and winning pitcher Travis Elliott of Gilbert added 2 RBI each.
Game 2 is set for 7 pm Tuesday at John Nave Stadium at Legion Field in Greenwood. Should Lexington win, it would either play host to Dalzell or travel to Sumter for Game 1 of the Bracket 4 final.
Chapin/Newberry season ends
The quest for a 4th state title in 8 years ended quietly for Chapin/Newberry Monday night.
Instead of traveling to SRP Park to start a Best-of-3 series with North Augusta Post 71, the team announced on Twitter its decision to conclude the season.
"Chapin-Newberry is unable to participate in 1st Rnd," it tweeted. "We want to thank all the leaders in our state that planned and executed the summer league - it was well run and worth doing - it was about baseball and about our young men. Thank you - we look forward to Legion ball next year."

North Augusta will now advance to face either Lancaster or Fort Mill in the Bracket 3 final.
