S.C. AMERICAN BASEBALL SUMMER LEAGUE - West Columbia, Chapin/Newberry on "Deja Vu Thursday"

Posted

It was “Deja Vu Thursday” for West Columbia and Chapin/Newberry in S.C. American Baseball Summer League play.

For the 2nd straight night, the 2 teams won by the exact same scores. West Columbia blanked North Augusta 10-0 to solidify its 1st place standing in the Midlands Division, while Chapin/Newberry edged Lexington 6-5 for its 2nd win against it at Segra Park.

West Columbia 10, North Augusta 0

A night after Matthew Dooley and Levi Dunn combined for a no-hitter, Winthrop signee Parker Whittle of Airport nearly matched them.

Whittle struck out 9 and allowed only a 4th inning single to A.J. Dieble in 5 ⅔ innings. Dunn allowed just 2 hits in 1 inning of relief and Alex Pegues recorded the final out.

The game was scoreless through the 1st 3 innings. An RBI single by Reign Lybrand and sacrifice bunt by Joshua Wise put West Columbia up 2-0 in the 4th.

Post 79 erupted for 5 runs in the 5th, capitalizing off 2 of North Augusta’s 4 errors. RBI singles by Landon Lucas and Dylan Johnson made it 9-0 in the 6th and Wise scored on a passed ball to close out the scoring.

West Columbia improved to 7-1 against SCABSL teams and 5-0 in Midlands Division play. Up next is a visit to Roscoe Frye Field Monday to face Lexington Post 7, followed by a makeup game Tuesday against Greenwood.

Chapin/Newberry 6, Lexington 5

A passed ball scoring Lawson Brand in the bottom 5th was the difference in Chapin/Newberry posting its 3rd victory this season over Lexington.

Stanton Hester’s RBI single in the bottom 2nd put Chapin/Newberry on top 1-0. Lexington put up 3 runs against University of South Carolina signee Cade Austin of Chapin in the Top 3rd to claim the lead.

Clemson signee Ricky Williams of River Bluff hit a 2-run double and Lexington starter Noah Davis of Chapin had an RBI fielder’s choice.

Chapin/Newberry answered with a 4-run rally in the bottom half of the inning. Byrce Medlock belted a 1-out solo home run off Davis that bounced off the top of the leftfield wall to make it 3-2.

Following singles by Austin and Brand, a single by Jalen McDuffie of Dutch Fork drove home 1 baserunner and a throwing error allowed the other to score and give Chapin/Newberry the lead.

Al Farmer scored Jalen McDuffie with an RBI single to close out the rally.

Lexington (7-5, 3-2) tied the game in the 4th with 2 runs off a RBI fielder’s choice by William Chastain of River Bluff and an RBI single by Josh Turner.

Chapin/Newberry (4-4, 2-4) loaded the bases in the 5th. It took the lead when Davis’ pitch went errant after Hester’s missed swing and Brand managed to safely reach homeplate.

Ryland Rychener finished the game on the mound for Chapin/Newberry, allowing 3 hits and striking out 3 in 3 ⅔ innings for the win.

Chapin/Newberry returns to action Monday at Greenwood.
