S.C. HIGH SCHOOL LEAGUE BASKETBALL PLAYOFFS - Second-ranked Swansea advances to Round 2

Lower State title game rematch in Swansea Thursday

Posted

With over 2,500 career points, Danae McNeal is among the top scorers in South Carolina High School League history.
For 2nd-ranked Swansea's Class 2A opening round contest against Academic Magnet, the Clemson University-bound guard was in a defensive mood. She collected 9 steals and 4 blocks to go with 15 points and 5 assists in the Lady Tigers' 50-26 win over the Lady Raptors.
Defensive prowess carried over the entire team as Swansea (22-2) increased its lead as many as 27 points in limiting Academic Magnet's scoring opponents.
"We focused on it in practice every day," Lady Tigers' head coach Tamara McNeal-Purdue said. "Defense and the offensive will automatically come. As long as we play great defense, we'll score off the defense."
Mya Edmond also scored in double figures with 10 points and Lauryn Robinson and Jasmine Lowman each added 9.
The Lady Tigers got a scare late in the 3rd quarter. As McNeal drove toward the basket for a layup, she fell hard to the floor and quickly limped towards the bench.
Her mother and head coach said she her ankle was a "little sore" and looked to have her ready for Tuesday's practice.
Up next for the Lady Tigers is a 2nd-round matchup at home Thursday against Ridgeland-Hardeville. It's a rematch of last year's Lower State final won by the Lady Jaguars 46-40 in Florence.
