Second half comeback lifts Batesburg-Leesville to win+

Posted

Week 3 of the S.C. High School League football season was closed out in dominating fashion by Batesburg-Leesville.
Trailing Mid-Carolina 13-7 at halftime, the Panthers' offense took control in the 2nd half and rolled to a 47-20 victory over the Rebels.
Amah-Dre Leaphart ignited the comeback with 144 of his 145 rushing yards and 2 touchdowns in the 2nd half. The Panthers (2-2) also got 144 passing yards and 4 TDs, 3 in the air, from quarterback Tre Robinson and Marvin Gantt closed out the evening with a 68-yard touchdown run to finish with 105 yards and 2 scores.
B-L took a 7-0 lead with 1:58 left in the first quarter on an 8-yard touchdown by Robinson set up by an interception by Shauntrel Hendrix. It was one of 3 interceptions by the Panthers' defense.
The Rebels proceeded to score 13 unanswered points off B-L mistakes. On consecutive possessions, errant snaps to punter Jackson Lorick set up scoring opportunities for the Rebels in the 2nd quarter.
In each case, Lorick was tackled by the Rebels in B-L territory.  The first misfired snap resulted in a 23-yard field goal by Drew Dominic. The next miscue gave Mid-Carolina the football at the 27 and, after a roughing the kicker penalty resulted in a 1st down, it scored on a 4-yard touchdown run by Justin Hedgepath to go up 10-7 with 4:16 left in the half.
Following an interception by Shelton Brooks, Mid-Carolina closed out the first half with a 35-yard field goal by Dominic.
B-L's Leaphart set the tone to start the 2nd half. He accounted for all 65 yards on 6 carries on a scoring drive to put the Panthers ahead 14-13 with 8:06 left in the 3rd quarter.
After a low snap fielded by Dominic forced him to down the football at his own 29, B-L scored again on a 10-yard touchdown pass by Robinson to Hendrix.
Mid-Carolina answered back with a 3-yard touchdown run by Hedgepath. On the ensuing kickoff, Hendrix burst downfield from his own 1 and raced untouched for a 99-yard touchdown to make it 28-20.
An interception and 32-yard return by Travis Williams set up B-L's next score on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Robinson to Gantt. In the 4th quarter, Ke'Shoun Williams collected an interception and the very next play saw Leaphart break free for a 65-yard touchdown to make it 41-20 with 11:38 left in the 4th quarter.
With 1:30 left, Gantt closed out the scoring when it found an opening at his own 35 and headed to the endzone.
B-L will have a short week as it travels to Lexington to face the Wildcats and their former head coach Perry Woolbright.
