Second-half defensive effort lifts 5th ranked Irmo boys to win over River Bluff

Yellow Jackets' Tim Whipple picks up 764th career win

Irmo boys' basketball coach Tim Whipple currently stands above his peers in terms of career victories.
On Tuesday, the active leader among S.C. High School League boys' basketball coaches earned his 764th win in the 61-55 win over River Bluff.
The preseason 5th ranked Yellow Jackets rallied from 9 points down in the 2nd half with a stifling defense which boosted its offense. They outscored the Gators 39-26 in the 2nd half led by point guard Dylan Williams with 15 points, 6 steals and 5 assists and Juice Kiett with 11.

Xavier Forest finished with 9 points and 4 rebounds, Tyrell Bing added 8 and C.J. Washington had 7 points and 8 rebounds.
"We struggle scoring and whenever you struggle scoring, you really better play really, really good defense," Whipple said. "And River Bluff is a hard team to cover because they shoot the ball well. They penetrate. It's hard to defend them. I think in the 2nd half, offensively, we settled down, made a few shots which helped and defensively, we played much better. We kept them off-balanced in the 2nd half."
After a short jumper at the buzzer to end the 1st quarter by Williams gave Irmo (7-1) a 12-9 lead, River Bluff answered with a 9-0 scoring run in the 2nd quarter. A trio of players led by Chase Powell, who scored 11 of his team-high 13 points in the 1st half, connected on 3 straight 3-pointers.
The Gators outscored the Yellow Jackets 20-10 in the 2nd quarter to take a 29-22 halftime lead. River Bluff scored to open the 2nd half, but then were outscored 21-7 the rest of the 3rd quarter.
Irmo found its touch from behind the arc, while limiting the scoring opportunities for River Bluff.
The Gators rallied to within a point with 6:03 left in the 4th quarter. Irmo managed to maintain its advantage and increased its lead as many as 8 points led by Washington.
"This is the 3rd year he's been on the varsity," said Whipple about Washington. "He's a sophomore, so naturally, he's got to be one who had to do it for us on the floor. But that's a struggle for us right now, leadership off the floor, and we need it. We've got to find that identity somehow."
Irmo heads to Lexington Friday. It marks the 1st time since 1987 that Whipple will not coach against the now-retired Bailey Harris.
River Bluff (3-2) will have back-to-back home games starting Friday against Strom Thurmond.
