The University of South Carolina baseball team clinched a series win over Cornell with a 10-3 victory Saturday afternoon at Founders Park.
The Gamecocks scored 3 runs in the first and added on 4 runs in the 3rd while Thomas Farr threw 6 1-hit innings to pick up his 3rd win of 2020.
Farr struck out 6 in his six frames, allowing the hit with a pair of walks. John Gilreath struck out a pair in his inning of work while Swansea's Josiah Sightler had 4 punchouts in 1 2/3 innings.
Noah Myers opened the 1st with a triple to the gap in left. He scored on Jeff Heinrich's single up the middle. Heinrich then trotted home as Wes Clarke belted his 8th home run of the season, a shot to the visitor's bullpen in left.
In the 3rd, Myers walked, stole 2nd and stole 3rd. Heinrich and Andrew Eyster both walked and Clarke was hit by a pitch to force in a run. Brady Allen singled through the left side to bring in the 5th run of the game. Carolina scored the final 2 runs of the frame on a wild pitch and a ground-ball double play.
Heinrich drove in his second run of the day with an RBI single in the 6th. South Carolina scored an unearned run in the 7th. Cornell came back to score 3 runs in the eighth, but South Carolina added its final run of the contest in the bottom of the 8th on a Burgess RBI groundout.
Heinrich and Allen had 2 hits apiece in the win while Myers reached base 4 times. Clarke drove in 3 runs, upping his season total to 22.
The final game of the series is set for 1 pm Sunday.
