SOUTH CAROLINA WOMEN'S BASKETBALL - Top-ranked Gamecocks look for 1st win over UConn

Posted

Top-ranked University of South Carolina women’s basketball team will play host to 4th ranked Connecticutt Monday night at Colonial Life Arena.

The game will air on ESPN2 and can be heard on WNKT (107.5 FM) or the TuneIn Radio Phone App.

The Gamecocks (22-1) are seeking their 1st ever win in 9 meetings against the Lady Huskies (20-2). It’s also the nation’s best 10th game against a nationally-ranked opponent for South Carolina, 8 of which are wins.

South Carolina's success has been built on both sides of the ball. The Gamecocks are fourth in the country in scoring offense (83.4) and 29th in scoring defense (56.3).

Averaging a double-double vs. the SEC play and ranked teams, Aliyah Boston is having one of the best freshman seasons in program history as she is ahead of the pace marked by the program's last two SEC Freshman of the Year winners – Alaina Coates (2014) and A'ja Wilson (2015).

Boston's 13.3 points per game edges out Wilson's 13.1, and her 9.0 rebounds per game are just ahead of Coates' 8.4. Boston's 2.9 blocks per game and .631 field goal percentage are ahead of Coates' marks (2.1, .612) as well. Her five double-doubles in SEC games matches Coates' for the program's freshman record, and her nine overall double-doubles is one shy of Coates' mark.

Freshman Zia Cooke has consistently shown the ability to rise to the occasion as her 12.4 points per game for the season include a team-high 15.1 in SEC play and 13.1 against ranked teams.

Parking for Monday’s game is available for $10 per vehicle in the Discovery Garage and the City Garage (located near Pendleton, Park and Lincoln Streets). Free parking is available in the Pendleton Street Garage (corner of Pickens and Pendleton). The shuttle from that location, which departs and returns to Pickens Street, begins two hours before tipoff and runs until one hour after the game ends.

A video interview with South Carolina freshman Olivia Thompson of Lexington High School is now available at www.lexingtonchronicle.com in the video section.
