The 2 Georgia-based Coastal Plain League teams have gotten the better of the Lexington County Blowfish this season.
On Friday, Lexington County played the role of “spoiler” for 1 of them. Boosted by a 7-strikeout pitching performance by Brett Fulk, the Blowfish defeated the Macon Bacon 4-3 at Luther Williams Stadium.
It was the first win in 5 tries this season for Lexington County (7-17) over the Bacon (16-9), who looked to clinch the first half South Division title with a win and Savannah Bananas’ loss.
Tristen Hudson’s tiebreaking RBI single in the top 7th was the difference in the contest. Hudson drove in 3 runs in the contest, 2 courtesy of errors by Macon.
Prior to Hudson’s go-ahead single, Jimmy Marcelli tied the game with an RBI single. Lexington County entered the inning trailing 3-2 after a fielding miscue in centerfield scored a run.
It was more than enough offense as the Blowfish bullpen pitched 3 innings of scoreless relief. The trio of Sheldon Reed, Jared Drayton and Will Abbott combined for 3 strikeouts and allowed just 1 hit in support of Fulk, whose lone 2 earned runs allowed came on a double by Nathan Schrenkengost in the bottom 1st.
Lexington County will close out the first half of the regular season Saturday at home against Savannah. The Bananas have won 10 consecutive games at Lexington County Baseball Stadium dating back to July 26, 2017.
The contest is designated as Motown Night as music from the famous Detroit, Mich. label will be played during the game and post-game fireworks show.
