SWEEP IN THE SWAMP - Lexington wins varsity doubleheader against River Bluff

Lady Wildcats prevail in OT, boys' team down 10th ranked Gators

Tuesday was a sweep in The Swamp for visiting Lexington High School.
Both the girls and boys' basketball teams came away with road victories over archrival River Bluff. More important, each team claimed a share of 1st place in Region 5-5A.

GIRLS BASKETBALL
Lexington 72, River Bluff 68 (OT)

A career-high 32 points from Alexis Sexton and 22 from Lindsay Garner helped the Lady Wildcats hand a determined Lady Gators' team their first region loss.
It was the 3rd straight win for Lexington (11-8, 3-1) following the 44-43 home loss to White Knoll in which it allowed the final 11 points of the game.
"We didn't have a good taste in our mouth after White Knoll," Lexington head coach Molly Goodrich said. "So we've just been practicing a lot harder going against our B-team boys and just refocusing. Shooting everyday in the morning and just trying to take everyday and be intentional with everything we do."
Lexington led as many as 12 points in the 1st half. In the 3rd quarter, River Bluff (12-8, 3-1) used a 8-0 run to close within 32-30. Lady Wildcats' senior point guard Mallory Rivers also fouled out of the game.
Lexington answered with a 9-2 run over the final 2 minutes of the quarter. With seconds remaining in the quarter, Sexton was fouled hitting a 3-pointer and converted the free-throw for the 4-point play to put the Lady Wildcats up 41-32.
The Lady Gators continued to mount a comeback in the fourth quarter. Down 55-49, River Bluff scored 6 straight points on a 3-pointer by Samira Khalil and 3-point play by Jaden Tucker to tie the game.
Khalil finished with 20 points to lead River Bluff, followed by Japonica Wilson with 19 and Tucker with 13.
There were 3 lead changes before Sexton tied the game with a running jumper. She then fouled Khalil with 3 seconds left, who missed the front end of the 1-and-1.
Brie Smith grabbed the rebound and was fouled as time expired on the putback. She was unable to connect on the free throws which sent the game into overtime.
"We like to keep things interesting, I guess," Lexington head coach Molly Goodrich said. "We didn't take care of the ball very well at the end. Made some silly mistakes and so I'm going to have to go back to the game film and watch that and just draw up more situations and learn from it."
The 2 teams exchanged 3-pointers to open overtime. A layup by Garner put the Lady Wildcats ahead to stay and, after River Bluff got within a point, Sexton hit a jumper with 48.2 seconds left to push the lead to 71-68.
Wilson looked to bring the Lady Gators closer, but was called for a charge and fouled out. Lexington added a free throw and River Bluff was unable to score again.
The win created a 3-way tie for 1st place between Lexington, River Bluff and White Knoll. The Lady Wildcats will head to Red Bank Friday to face the Lady Timberwolves in an anticipated rematch.
"Can't wait!"," Goodrich said. "Very excited!"

BOYS BASKETBALL
Lexington 51, River Bluff 27

A depleted Gators' squad missing their top 2 scorers could not keep pace with the Wildcats.
After taking a 22-17 halftime lead, Lexington dominated the 2nd half in holding 10th ranked River Bluff to 10 points. There was a 9-minute stretch between the 3rd and 4th quarter in which the Gators were held without a field goal.
Tae'jan Myers was the only player in double figures for River Bluff (15-6, 2-2) with 12 points.
Cameron Scott led the Wildcats (13-8, 3-1) with 19 points and Adin Daniels had 16. The win moved Lexington into a 1st place tie with Dutch Fork in the region standings.
River Bluff returns to action Feb. 4 at home against Dutch Fork.
