The Three Cs propel Lexington County to win over Florence

Posted

Just 24 hours after suffering the worst loss since moving from Columbia, the Lexington County Blowfish rebounded Tuesday night with a nail-biting win.
The Blowfish held off Florence 7-6 to snap a 2-game losing streak. It was boosted by the Blowfish's three Cs - Coastal Plain League All-Star Chandler Jenkins, Chandler Redmond and C.J. Smith - each belting 3-run homers and starting pitcher Brett Fulk striking out seven and allowing just three runs in six innings.
Coming off a 18-1 loss to Savannah on Monday, things looked like deja vu for Lexington County in the top of the first. Florence took a 1-0 lead on the first of four Blowfish errors and had the bases loaded with no outs.
Fulk proceeded to strike out the next three batters to retire the side. After Smith hit a one-out single, Jenkins hit a 2-run shot over the wall for his first homer of the season.
Three batters later, after Sean Parsons of River Bluff High School reached with a single, Redmond took Florence starting pitcher Colby Lee deep for another 2-run homer to make it 4-1.
After entering the contest having allowed just one home run, Lee gave up his third, 2-run homer in the second. This time, Smith went deep to score he and Jared Williams of Gilbert High School and North Greenville.
The Tate brothers secured the Blowfish's final run in the fifth. Cole Tate drove home Connor with a single to rightfield for what proved to be the game-winning run.
A McClendon Sears' triple in the sixth brought Florence to within 7-2. After Fulk left the game, the Redwolves (17-18, 3-9) scored four runs in the top of the eighth off relievers Jon Scott of Lexington High and the College of Charleston and Andrew Tilghman.
Tilghman would retire the final four batters faced to close out the victory.
Lexington County (12-22, 4-6) moved to within two games of first place Savannah, whose game with the Macon Bacon was postponed due to weather. The Blowfish are idle Wednesday and will return home Thursday as either the Blowfish or Pancakes to face Macon.
