VOLLEYBALL Gilbert sweeps Strom Thurmond to take region lead

River Bluff swim teams stay undefeated during the regular season

Posted

As a freshman, Courtney Price was a member of the Gilbert volleyball team that defeated Strom Thurmond to claim the Region 5-3A title.
On Thursday, she and the Lady Indians took a step towards regaining the title with a 3-set win over the Lady Rebels. Gilbert won 25-20, 25-16, 25-16 to improve to 12-1 overall, 4-0 in region play as Chidera Wilson had 10 kills, followed by Price with nine and Carlee Jones with seven.
"My freshman year, I remember beating Strom Thurmond for the region," Price said. "I know we fell to Strom Thurmond in the region and to finally have one win over them is a big deal and I'm ready to play them again and go ahead and clinch it again and get ready for the rest of region play and start the playoffs."
The rematch will have to wait to the end of the season. Prior to Thursday's contest, the two schools agreed to move Monday's contest in Johnston to Oct. 16.
"I think the ladies did well tonight," Gilbert head coach Jackie Shealy said. "Overall, we still have a lot of practice and...really we've got to execute our offense better. I felt we could have even played better than what we did.
"Strom Thurmond, I thought they played a great defensive game. We just need to keep pushing and make sure that we're reaching our goals and I think the girls really wanted to win. They went out there and got it. It may not have been the prettiest from us, but they did what they had to do to win."
Gilbert will next play this weekend in the Carolina Challenge at North Central. The Lady Indians return to region play Tuesday at Edisto.
