Chronicle Country soccer teams put in the overtime Tuesday night.
There were 3 critical contests for the playoff hopes of Lexington County schools went well into the evening.
In the case of host team White Knoll, the preserverence more than paid off with just a victory. The 1-0 overtime win over top-ranked River Bluff clinched a share of the Region 5-5A title and a playoff berth.
Shelby Freeman scored with 1 minute left in overtime to give the Lady Timberwolves (9-4-1, 6-2) their 4th straight region victory.
Over at Cecil Woolbright Field, Lexington needed a victory over Chapin to force a 3-way tiebreaker. The match was tied at 1-1 through regulation and 2 overtimes and was settled on penalty kicks.
In the end, the Lady Eagles prevailed on the penalty kicks to knock the Lady Wildcats (12-6, 5-3) out of the playoffs. Chapin finished the season 9-7 overall, 3-5 in region play.
River Bluff (11-2, 6-2) and White Knoll shared the region title. For the playoffs, the Lady Gators earned the top seed based on the points allowed tiebreaker and the Lady Timberwolves are the 2nd seed.
While the Region 5-5A title is settled for the girls, the boys contest will come down to Thursday's meeting in The Swamp between top-ranked Chapin and 3rd ranked River Bluff.
The Gators (12-2, 5-2) kept alive their title hopes with a 6-0 win over White Knoll. They can claim the region championship with a win Thursday over the Eagles, who they defeated 3-1 in overtime last week.
Should Chapin (13-1, 6-1) win, it claims the region title and Lexington (16-3, 5-3) earns the 2nd playoff spot over River Bluff based on the points tiebreaker.
Over in Johnston, the Gilbert girls soccer team also found themselves needing extra time to clinch the Region 5-3A title. The Lady Indians were deadlocked at 2-2 with Strom Thurmond through regulation and 2, 5-minute overtimes.
During the penalty kicks, Gilbert outscored the Lady Rebels 3-1 to complete an undefeated season in region play. Riley Barnes and Meredith McEnulty both had goals in regulation and Harmony Hendrix and Kinlee Mozley were credited with assists for the Lady Indians (15-5, 8-0).
Gilbert will have a non-region home contest Monday against Ridge Spring-Monetta.
(BOYS SOCCER)
Gilbert 6, Strom Thurmond 1
The Indians will face Swansea in a 1-match playoff for the final post-season berth out of Region 5-3A Thursday.
Game time is 6 pm at Pelion High School.
