American adds nonstop Columbia-to-Chicago service, now has 7 direct flights from airport

Posted

American Airlines is set to add three nonstop destinations to its flight roster at the Columbia Metropolitan Airport this year.

After announcing in December that it would resume service to New York City (starting May 5) and then revealing earlier this month that it would resume service to Miami (starting June 3), the company announced that it will add daily nonstop service to Chicago beginning July 6.

Tickets for all three are now available to purchase.

According to a release from the airport, the Chicago addition brings American’s number of nonstop Columbia flights to seven, the most offered by any of the three carriers who operate out of the facility. Delta Air Lines and United Airlines each offer two nonstop destinations.

American also offers nonstop service to Charlotte, Dallas-Fort Worth, Philadelphia and Washington (D.C.).

“The addition of another American Airlines route shows the confidence the airline has in this market, as well as the active response from the community in continuing to utilize this airport and its airline’s route offerings,” Kim Crafton, the airport’s director of marketing and air service development, is quoted. “We look forward to seeing CAE bustling this summer with travelers taking advantage of this flight and the many others available.”

American’s daily Chicago service is set to depart from Columbia at 7:14 a.m. and arrive at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport at 8:38 a.m., according to the release, with passengers traveling on a 50-seat CRJ-200 regional jet.

The Columbia airport already offered Chicago service through United Airlines and New York service through Delta Air Lines. American’s Miami service, a seasonal offering set to run between June 3 and Aug. 12, will be the only one departing from Columbia.

The airport’s roster of nonstop flights also includes a Delta service to Atlanta.

Adding direct flights has been a point of emphasis for the airport as it looks to compete with nearby larger airports in Charlotte and Atlanta.

“We are so thankful to the American Airlines team for their commitment to the Columbia Metropolitan Airport and the Columbia community,” Mike Gula, the airport’s executive director, is quoted. “We ask that the community continue to support local, by flying local. The more the Midlands region residents fly out of CAE, the more opportunities like this new route we’ll see.”
