American Airlines resumes direct flights from Columbia to NYC

Posted

The Columbia Metropolitan Airport now has two airlines offering nonstop service to the country’s largest city.

The West Columbia airport announced Dec. 9 that American Airlines will resume service to New York City’s LaGuardia Airport, joining Delta Air Lines, which already offers direct flights to the city. American’s New York flights are set to resume May 5 and can be booked starting Dec. 10.

“The return of this nonstop service is the last route needed to reestablish CAE’s nonstop destination roster to its pre-pandemic status,” said Director of Marketing and Air Service Development Kim J. Crafton. “We are thrilled to have such a strong airline partner in American Airlines and appreciate their robust presence in our market.”

According to a release, American Airlines’ daily flights are slated to depart Columbia at 4:40 p.m. and arrive at LaGuardia at 6:40 p.m. The type of aircraft is set to be an E170 or E175, with 65-76 seats that can be configured into business and economy classes.

The airline also announced direct daily service to LaGuardia from Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport, which will offer two daily American flights to New York on the same size aircraft as the ones set to depart from Columbia, according to a release from GSP.

As with Columbia, GSP already offered flights to New York through Delta.

As of May 5, the Columbia Metropolitan Airport will offer direct flights to seven destinations and eight airports:

  • Atlanta (Delta)
  • Charlotte (American)
  • Chicago (United)
  • Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas (American)
  • New York City (American)
  • New York City (Delta)
  • Philadelphia (American)
  • Washington, D.C./Reagan National (American)
  • Washington, D.C./Dulles (United)

Adding direct flights to more destinations has been a point of emphasis for the airport as it looks to compete with close-by bigger airports in Charlotte and Atlanta.

“The return of this American Airlines service shows that this community continues to consider and choose CAE to fly out of when making their air travel plans,” Executive Director Mike Gula is quoted in the airport's release. “We are thankful for the ongoing support and appreciate each and every person that sees the value in flying local.”
