The first 2023 fishing event at Lake Murray saw a resident come through with the top prize.
Chapin boater Chris Epting won the MLF Phoenix Bass Fishing League (BFL) Presented by T-H Marine on Lake Murray. The tournament, held by the Capital City Lake Murray Country Regional Transportation Board, earned Eptin $8,500, which included a $2,500 Phoenix MLF Contingency Bonus.
"I won here in 2021, but it was a lot colder and a lot wetter," Epting said. "But fishing conditions were similar this time as to they were then."
Epting started his weekend by using windy points and rocks using spinnerbaits, Lunker Lure and Buckeye Lures Jigs to finish in the middle portion of Lake Murray.
After relocating, Epting started to find success culling fish. He caught and five and six-pounder and after returning to mid-lake, caught a seven-pound bass. He had a 2.75-pound bass in the livewell he tried to cull but never managed to replace.
"I was really nervous because I knew what it had been taking to win here," Epting said. "My team partner and I weighed one of the biggest bags I’d ever heard of here not too long ago, and it went more than 29.5 pounds. So, I wasn’t sure I had enough to win this time."
Columbia native Brandon Jeffcoat finished seventh at the event, followed by Irmo native Wendell Causey. Complete results can be found at majorleaguefishing.com.
