During a recent town council meeting, the Chapin Police Department gave its April 2025 report to council members, detailing a slight uptick in calls for service compared to March 2025 statistics.

Chief of Police Thomas W. Griffin reported that on April 15, there was a break-in at Generations Pharmacy. As of May, the department had a few suspects provided by the DEA and is in the process of executing search warrants for cell phone tower data.

According to a document presented at the meeting, the department reported 42 offenses, seven assists to other agencies, 40 tickets, 107 warning citations, five arrests, 16 motor vehicle collisions, 338 officer-initiated contacts and 150 calls for service.

In comparison, the department’s March report included 47 offenses, five assists to other agencies, 44 tickets, 88 warning citations, three arrests, 10 motor vehicle collisions, 462 officer-initiated contacts and 126 calls for service.

Griffin also noted that officers have attended training sessions.

Some of the training sessions include MASC Risk Management, mid-level management, crisis negotiation and the Reid Technique of interviewing and interrogation.

“I’m thrilled to hear about all the training,” Mayor Al Koon said. “That was a lot of training you went through, and I think that’s extremely valuable and improves our department and improves each of our officers.”

Griffin agreed and said the department's officers were praised for their performance by the training leaders.

“We hope one of our appeals when bringing in new officers is that we genuinely create a training development plan for each individual officer on what they want to pursue,” Griffin said.
