Elizabeth Louise Bennett Fertick was born July 29, 1948 in Conway Hospital to Louise Smith and Joel Bennett. She was raised by her grandparents Girley and Emma Smith. Libby grew up on a small farm near Tabor City, North Carolina. She was surrounded by a large family of aunts, uncles and many cousins. She worked on the family farm from the age of four until her early teens. Libby left the farm when she was about fourteen years old and went on to support herself through high school and business school by working as a waitress. She graduated from Massey-Hill High School in Fayetteville, North Carolina in 1966 and moved to West Columbia later that year. Libby worked for many years in Lexington CountySchool District 2 and retired from Fulmer Middle School in 2004.
In December of 1967, Libby married Danis Clayton “Danny” Fertick. They had two children, Toni Fertick Chewning (Richard W. “Chip”, IV) and Danis Clayton Fertick II (Dawn). Libby spent many years enjoying her grandchildren: Richard W. “Dillon” Chewning V (Laurin) known as Henry, Danis “Clayton” Fertick III (Morgan) known as Edsel, Emilee Grace Fertick Chandler (Andrew) know as Clara and Mason Payne Chewning known as Willie. A great granddaughter will be welcomed in the fall of 2023.
