Eze After School Opens White Knoll Location for Upcoming School Year

Posted

Ezekiel Ministries is opening its third afterschool program for the upcoming school year. Eze After School’s White Knoll location, housed at Radius White Knoll on Platt Springs Road, offers a safe space for elementary school kids to play and learn.

The low cost program is $10 a week per child and an additional $5 for each sibling or child in the household. It’s different from other programs with the low cost aspect, but White Knoll Site Director Emily Fordree also said they want to pour support into families and kids while having an opportunity to mentor while connecting, growing and loving the children.

The program is for elementary students in kindergarten through fifth grade, with the program ending at 5:30 p.m. Currently, Ezekiel has availability for about 30 students, with over half of that number filled.

If the White Knoll location gets more part-time teachers, it can accept more students. There are no specific requirements except for a background check.

The afterschool program has a bus to pick up children from Lexington County School District 1 schools Saxe Gotha Elementary, White Knoll Elementary and Carolina Springs Elementary. Kids are offered a snack every day and have a chance to play and let their energy out, Fordree said.

Then there will be three different classrooms through which the students will rotate, including Life Skills, tutoring and Bible lessons. Parent participation is encouraged, and there are parents who volunteer and bring their kids.

The program also offers various enrichments from community members who volunteer their to teach trade or talent to young kids.

“If you have a special skill or trade, come and lead,” Fordree said.

Ezekiel has had people teach music, sewing, karate and woodworking. One hour a week is all that is necessary to volunteer for enrichments.

The program also encourages middle and high schoolers to volunteer as peer mentors. Other volunteer positions include bus drivers, cleaning, serving snacks and other behind-the-scenes jobs if working in the classroom isn’t their forte.

Mentoring is a big part of Ezekiel Ministries, as it also has a mentorship program for children ages 6 to 16. The teachers and volunteers hope for children in the afterschool program to move on to the mentoring program.

When someone decides to join the mentoring program, that person is joining a web of mentoring, said Communications Coordinator Shayla Tabor. Volunteers are interviewed and matched with a young person, she added.

Eze After School offers three after school programs. In addition to the White Knoll location they have a downtown Lexington location and a Columbia location.
