Gamecocks set to host LSU in battle of SEC heavyweights

Posted

Two of the SEC's strongest women's basketball teams will go head-to-head this week with first place in the conference on the line.

The upcoming meeting between the South Carolina Gamecocks and the LSU Tigers was scheduled for Thursday but moved to Friday because of winter weather.

ESPN's College Gameday was set to attend the matchup for the second year in a row but had to back out after the date changed.

The  Gamecocks and the Tigers have been two of the most dominant teams in women’s college basketball in recent years. They are the two most recent national champions and have regularly been ranked near the top of the AP poll.

Both teams are led by some of the game’s greatest coaches.

Gamecock head coach Dawn Staley is a three-time national champion and recently signed a contract extension to become the highest-paid women’s basketball coach of all time. She has won four of the past five Naismith Coach of the Year Awards.

LSU coach Kim Mulkey is a four-time national championship winner with titles at Baylor and LSU. She is a three-time Coach of the Year and has also won two titles as a player in 1981 and 82 at Louisiana Tech.

Both teams are currently ranked top-five in the nation and sit undefeated atop the SEC standings. The Gamecocks are 18-1 with its lone loss coming against No. 1 UCLA. LSU is 20-0 with wins over ranked N.C. State and Tennessee.

Despite both programs' recent success, it is a stretch to call the meeting a rivalry. If it is one, it’s a very one-sided one.

South Carolina has won 16 consecutive meetings against LSU. Under Mulkey, the Tigers have never beaten the Gamecocks.

LSU has won no conference championship in that time frame and has finished behind the Gamecocks every year in the regular season since 2011.

In LSU’s national championship-winning season, the Tigers avoided the Gamecocks throughout the NCAA tournament. South Carolina was eliminated by Iowa in the Final Four. LSU went on to beat Iowa in the championship game.

Last season, the Gamecocks defeated LSU twice, winning on the road in Baton Rouge and in the SEC tournament championship game. Both contests were close, but the Gamecocks did enough to pull away.

This meeting will look a little different than the previous ones as both teams look a little different. Last season’s stars Kamilla Cardoso for the Gamecocks and Angel Reese for the Tigers have moved on to the WNBA. The two are actually now teammates on the Chicago Sky.

Despite the new look, both teams still play their style of basketball. The Gamecocks focus on utilizing their depth and playing tough defense. The Tigers will lean on their stars like Flau'Jae Johnson, who averages over 20 points per game.

This game will determine who is in the driver's seat as SEC conference play nears its midway point. The Gamecocks are seeking their fourth consecutive conference regular season title. LSU is looking for its first since 2008.

The Gamecocks and Tigers will tip off from Colonial Life Arena this Friday at 5 p.m. The game will be broadcast on ESPN.
