Lake Murray Symphony’s November Concert Postponed Until June

Posted

The Lake Murray Symphony continues to wait on starting its season.

The ensemble’s scheduled Nov. 14 concert at the Harbison Theatre at Midlands Tech in Irmo is rescheduled until June 16, due to continued concerns about COVID-19.

“The LMSO begins rehearsals for a concert about two months prior to the actual concert date,” explained Regina Trojanowsky, the organization’s president. “The decision to cancel this concert was made in mid-September which was at the time that the Delta variant was at its peak and hospitalizations were at a level that was equal to January (before the vaccine).

“We felt that it was unsafe for the musicians (even those who are vaccinated) to gather to begin rehearsals at that time, especially since it isn’t possible for the wind players to mask during rehearsals.”

This program for the concert postponed to June is “The Voice,” which promises “a night at the opera” featuring soprano Katie Gatch. One other concert scheduled for the symphony’s current season, the Sept. 12 Koncert for Kids, was canceled.

Trojanowsky indicated the orchestra would go ahead with its next scheduled concert, a program of film compolistions called “Reel Music,” on Feb. 27 at the Harbison Theatre.

“The LMSO is looking forward to resuming rehearsals in January to begin preparing for our Feb. 27 concert — barring any new virus resurgence, of course,” the president said.

Around since 2004, the Lake Murray Symphony is an all-volunteer orchestra located in Irmo/Lexington. Per its website, the group is “dedicated to performing a varied repertoire of classical, light classical and pops music [to provide] quality live symphonic music to listeners of all ages and musical tastes.”

The website notes that the group typically performs four to six concerts per year, all of which are free to attend.
