Lexington County extends $1.5M contract for employee medical clinic

Posted

At its Nov. 15 meeting, Lexington County Council approved a one-year extension of the contract  with the company that provides the county’s On-Site Medical Clinic for employees.

County officials said the estimated annual contract value with Marathon Health Inc. is $1,507,000. The service has been provided for almost a decade.

Lexington County Council Chairman Scott Whetstone told the Chronicle he is very pleased with the services provided by the company and the county hasn’t had any problems with it.

“It’s been an absolutely phenomenal thing for our employees,” he said.

County Council initially approved the services on Sept. 20, 2013 for a period of three years with an option to extend additional one-year periods, if deemed to be in the best interest of the county. The contract went into effect on Feb. 19, 2014 and currently expires Feb. 18, 2023.

County officials are requesting that the seventh extension begin February 19, 2023 through February 18, 2024.

The service is available for 1,495 employees, according to county officials. Currently, 1,310 employees are enrolled.

The clinic is located in the Auxiliary Building at 605 West Main St. in Lexington.

The medical staff for the clinic includes one full-time physician, one full-time nurse, one full-time physician’s assistant, one full-time nursing assistant, one part-time behavioral health employee, two lab technicians, and a front desk administrator.

By helping employees improve their health through primary and preventive care services, the partnership reduces medical costs for the county, according to a post to MidlandsBiz that appeared a few years after the contract began.

Marathon Health’s total population health management model moves away from “sick care” toward a solution focused on the whole person, not just their symptoms, according to the post.

“The model is designed to help individuals across the health continuum maintain or improve their health status, while at the same time helping employers reduce the increasing burden of healthcare costs.”

According to the Marathon Health website, benefits offered include same-day and next-day appointments (lasting 30 minutes on average), 3.5 average visits per year per patient, shared patient information across the care team, and 24/7 access

Marathon Health provides similar services for local governments nationwide.
