Lexington Stays Unbeaten in Region 5-5A Wrestling

Winning on "Senior Recognition Night" and staying undefeated in the region would make for a pleasant evening for most teams.

Following Wednesday's 46-27 home win over White Knoll, however, Lexington head coach Chase Owens was in less than celebratory spirits.

"I'm proud of them getting the win," he said. "The same as last week for getting the win (over River Bluff). But, if this is a team that wants to go all the way in the playoffs, they've got to clean up. They've got to clean up some points because there's some matches we lost we shouldn't have lost. There's some matches we won we very easily could have lost."

A decision win by Eric Lopez at 145 pounds and pinfall by Cam Rice at 152 pounds gave the Timberwolves an early 9-0 lead. After Coleman Bland put Lexington on the board with a pinfall at 160 pounds, White Knoll won the next two matches to go up 18-6.

Consecutive pinfall wins by Tanner Johnson and Payton Mathis tied the match at 18-18. White Knoll's Jakari Shell earned a pinfall win at 285 pounds and, following a forfeit at 106 pounds for Lexington's Ellyanna Mattingly, White Knoll's Dawson Prevatte earned a decision victory at 113 pounds to make it 27-24.

The Wildcats proceeded to win the final four matches, three by pinfall, to improve to 2-0 in Region 5-5A.

Lexington will have a pair of non-region tri-matches on Jan. 18 (Spring Valley, Columbia) and Jan. 21 (Clover, Socastee) before facing Dutch Fork Jan. 26.

"Those matches next week are just to fine tune," Owens said. "A good break from the region. Fix some stuff up. Clean up this team."

White Knoll will participate in the Military Duals Friday and Saturday at Dutch Fork and visit Lugoff-Elgin Jan. 17 for a tri-match with Eastside.

The Timberwolves return to region action Jan. 19 at home against Chapin.
