Loaded Handgun Found in Student's Car at Airport High School

Cayce Police report finding a loaded handgun in a student’s car at Airport High School.

According to a release, the weapon was found the morning of Nov. 4 after “officers with the Cayce Police Department were alerted that a student at Airport High School was suspected of selling narcotics.”

“The School Resource Officer and Cayce Police conducted a search of the student’s car and belongings,” the release states.

Also found in the car were vape materials and other paraphernalia. The release does not note the presence of any illegal drugs.

Possession of  "an E- Cigarette, Juul, or any type vaping device or E- Cigarette/vaping pod" on school grounds is against Lexington County School District 2 rules.

A note sent to Airport High families and staff that was subsequently shared with the Chronicle indicates that administrators and the school resource officer followed up on a tip and approached the student as he was getting out of his car in the school parking lot, which led to the search.

The district's note lists alcohol among the illicit items found in the car.

The incident remains under investigation by Cayce Police. The student was transported to the state Department of Juvenile Justice.

In the note to families and staff, the district states that the student "will face district discipline in accordance with board policy and state law."

"Lexington Two does not tolerate weapons on campus or any potential threat to the safety of our students or employees," the note reads. "We ask parents and guardians to remind their students to immediately report to an administrator, teacher, SRO, or other district employee any alleged threats or suspicious activities."

This is a developing story and will continue to be updated.
