Man Who Died Falling From Columbia Balcony After Cayce Police Chase Identified

Posted

The name of a man who died Sept. 24 after falling from a balcony at the Columbia Metropolitan Convention Center has been released.

Richland County Coroner Naidia Rutherford’s office identified the man as Harry D. Simms, a 62-year-old from Charlotte, in a Facebook post.

“We are working with the Columbia Police Department and Cayce Police Department to fully investigate this incident,” Rutherford is quoted.

Cayce Police announced over the weekend that one of its officers approached a car at Guignard Park, a couple blocks away from the Congaree River and the Blossom Street Bridge to Columbia, before the car sped away, eventually crashing into a curb and concrete planter at the convention center.

According to a release, the driver, identified by the coroner’s office as Simms, fled on foot (without Cayce officers giving chase) and fell from an upper level balcony outside the convention center to the lower level, causing his death.

“Our officer responded in accordance with his training by calling for additional officers and first checking on the other individual from the single car accident,” Cayce Police Chief Chris Cowan is quoted in the press release. “There was no foot chase initiated.”

The Cayce Police release noted that the driver was wanted on a non-extradition warrant in Georgia.
