New postmaster imposes cost-saving rules

Posted

Please don't fret if your Lexington County Chronicle is occasionally late.

The US Postal Service's new postmaster general has established cost-saving policies.

At least one of them could slow down your mail delivery.

Mail carriers are told to leave mail behind at distribution centers rather than taking late trips, extra trips, or logging overtime,.

According to The Washington Post:

  • The Postal Service is on financially shaky ground because of the corona virus pandemic,
  • Due to massive pension and other costs, it may run out of cash by the end of September.
  • New USPS Postmaster General Louis DeJoy sent revised rules this week.
  • DeJoy told workers to stop logging overtime and leave mail if it delays their routes.

The Post reported his directive read:

"If you get mail late and your carriers are gone and you cannot get the mail out without OT, it will remain for the next day."
