Koshka, the Amur Tiger, passed away at the age of 19. During her life, she received laser therapy for arthritis, regular check-ups and husbandry practices to support her. Koshka suffered from intervertebral disc disease, which is common in large cats.
Despite efforts from her care team and veterinarians, Koshka’s condition affected her mobility and the team made the decision to euthanize Koshka.
"Koshka was an integral part of the Riverbanks family and a true ambassador for her species," Tommy Stringfellow, president and CEO of Riverbanks, said in the press release. "Her presence touched the lives of countless visitors and staff members over the years inspiring a deep appreciation for tiger conservation."
Koshka gave birth to four cubs playing a crucial role in efforts for this endangered species as there are less than 500 Amur Tigers in the wild.
Visitors saw Koshka in her yard and how she adapted to the colder climate in January.
She was known for her intelligence and worked well with her keepers allowing them to administer treatments, nail trims, fluid supplementation and laser therapy, according to the zoo’s press release.
"Koshka serves as an inspiration reminding everyone of the importance of wildlife conservation and the profound impact that animal care can have," said Dr. Martha Weber, director of Animal Health at Riverbanks Zoo and Garden. "Her memory will continue to inspire and educate future generations about Amur tigers and the critical need for their protection. We are grateful for the time we spent with Koshka and the impact she had on conservation awareness."
Riverbanks will continue to partner with other institutions to help the survival of Amur Tigers.
