Columbia Police announced late Saturday night that an arrest was made following the day’s shooting at the Columbiana Centre mall and that it is working to identify two more suspects.

The department also updated the number of victims, raising it to 14 from the 12 that were initially reported. There were no fatalities.

Jewayne Price, 22, is charged with unlawful carrying of a pistol, though a release from the department notes that additional charges may be forthcoming. Two other male suspects were detained for questioning and have been released.

After speaking with witnesses and reviewing surveillance video, CPD investigators believe that at least three suspects displayed firearms inside the mall. CPD is working to determine how many suspects discharged firearms, thus injuring multiple people,” the release states. “CPD investigators have seized one firearm related to the incident. Preliminary examination of ballistic evidence collected from the scene indicates that at least two different firearms were used by two suspects.

“It is believed that the shooting was an isolated incident between the suspects and likely stemmed from an on-going conflict.”

The shooting, which was initially called into 911 at approximately 2:03 p.m., took place inside the mall that straddles the Lexington/Richland county line. The call placed the shooting near the Gap store, Columbia Police Chief Skip Holbrook said at a media briefing following the incident.

He also confirmed that multiple shots were fired.

"Our community is saddened by this senseless shooting and the pain it caused to innocent bystanders," Columbia Mayor Daniel Rickenman tweeted. "Our focus is on getting them treatment right now and on being supportive of the multiple law enforcement agencies working together to bring these criminals to justice."

Following his arrest, Price was taken to the Lexington County Detention Center. His bond was set at $25,000 after a hearing at Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center in Richland County.  He is represented by attorney Todd Rutherford.

Price is prohibited from contacting any injured victims or people involved in the Saturday shooting. He is also on house arrest and ordered to wear an ankle monitor, though he is allowed to go from his home to work at certain times of day.

The Saturday night release from Columbia Police updated the number and nature of injuries from the shooting.

“After speaking with medical personnel at various hospitals, it has now been confirmed that there are 14 total victims ranging in age from 15 to 73-years-old; nine of the victims suffered gunshot wounds; five of the victims suffered other injuries including broken bones lacerations and a head injury while attempting to leave the mall for safety,” the release states. “At last check, the only victim who continues to receive medical treatment at a local hospital is the 73-year-old female. All of the other victims have been treated and released or will be released shortly.”

Prisma Health reports that it received 11 victims at its Midlands hospitals, with various injuries that included gunshot wounds. Nine were treated and released. Two were admitted.

Following the shooting, Holbrook reported that victims were taken to Prisma Health Baptist Parkridge, Prisma Health Richland and Lexington Medical Center.

“CPD investigators continue to make progress and follow leads in the case,” the department’s Saturday night release states. “CPD extends its sincere appreciation for tips received so far.”

The department encourages those with information to call the Columbia Police Criminal Investigations Bureau at (803) 545-3525.
