Posted

A driver from Swansea died Wednesday night when he struck an oncoming Lexington County Fire Service engine.

The incident took place at about 6:10 p.m. at the intersection of St. Matthews Road and Pine Tower Circle in Swansea.

"[The fire engine] was traveling east on SC-6," Master Trooper David Jones said in a recorded release, noting that the engine was hit by a 2004 Buick sedan.

"[The car] was traveling west. [The car] crossed the center line and struck [the engine] head on."

According to a Facebook post from the Lexington County Coroner’s Office, Coroner Margaret Fisher has identified the deceased as Christopher Lykes Sr., 71.

Both the coroner's office and Master Trooper Jones said that Lykes wasn't wearing a seat belt. Jones reported that Lykes was found dead on scene.

The master trooper said that both the operator and passenger in the fire engine were wearing seat belts and that they were transported to an area hospital with minor injuries.

Lexington County Public Information Officer Jessica Imbimbo identified the engine as 316, which was traveling non-emergent back to the station at the time of the crash.

Master Trooper Jones said the Highway Patrol's investigation is ongoing.
