State Street River District of West Columbia celebrated the grand opening of two businesses joining the area. Garden and Relic as well as Steven Whetstone Fine Arts opened doors officially on Friday, Aug. 23 with a double-ribbon-cutting celebration and block party. Hosted by the Cayce West Columbia Chamber of Commerce, the ribbon cutting was a celebration of not only the two businesses joining the district, but the area’s growth as well.
Jay White, owner of Garden and Relic, has already had an existing business within the WeCo business center since 2017. Located right next to Cafe Strudel, The Warehouse has been in business for seven years and specializes in art, consignment and antique furnishing. Due to The Warehouse’s retail success, White expanded into the commercial space next door and opened Garden and Relic. Garden and Relic specializes in garden items and furniture, unique plants and architectural salvaged items. Garden and Relic also offers event decorating and a venue rental of the back garden located at the storefront. He attributes the expansion and success of his businesses to his loyal customers, friends and family.
Steven Whetstone, a renowned local artist, also celebrated the grand opening of his new storefront, Steven Whetstone Fine Art. Whetstone is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and was the pitcher for the USC baseball team during his school years. After graduation, he then went on to play for the Chicago White Sox organization. After a few seasons, he followed his true talent and passion, art. This local artist has been painting since 2004 and specializes in oil canvas pieces. Some of his notable work includes portraits, landscapes and pieces to be displayed within the home. He also will take select commissions upon request.
As a local business owner and University of South Carolina graduate, Jay White is passionate about seeing the WeCo River District thrive.
“The Weco River District is made up of twelve small businesses that run along State Street to 12th Street,” White said. “We work together to make the area as good and unique as it possibly can be.”
White also encourages the community to support local business owners and artists.
“Shopping local is so important. It keeps the area unique and makes it a community unlike anywhere else,” White told the Chronicle. “The State Street is one of the last areas that exhibits all locally owned small businesses.”
