Pair of goalies win Athlete of the Week after shining in final games of regular season

The spring sports regular season has wrapped up, and the playoffs are here. Last week, these two athletes helped their teams finish the season strong and carry momentum into the postseason.

Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek.

John Gilfillan

River Bluff boys soccer goalie John Gilfillan won Athlete of the Week after helping the Gators clinch their region title last week.

The Gators defeated Chapin 2-0 in the season finale. Gilfillan played all 80 minutes and kept every shot that came his way out of the net.

Gilfillan earned his eighth shutout this season. He has been one of the top goalies in the area, allowing just seven goals this year.

The team will rely on him to continue to play in the postseason. The Gators are off to a good start after earning an 8-0 win over Goose Creek.

Hannah Miles

Goalies swept this week’s honors with Gilbert’s Hanna Miles earning Athlete of the Week.

Miles helped Gilbert finish second in its region to qualify and host a playoff game this week. Miles had an exceptional game for the Indians in 40 minutes of action against Lugoff-Elgin last week.

She faced four shots and stopped them all to set the Indians up for the win. Since rejoining the lineup in early April, the Indians have won eight of their nine games.

This season, Miles has shut down the opposing team’s offense, allowing less than a goal a game. She has almost 10 times the number of saves and goals against. Gilbert will hope Miles continues to shine throughout the team’s time in the playoffs.
