There is one full week of lacrosse left for teams across Lexington County before the playoffs begin. But first, the majority of teams are taking a brief pause as the student-athletes enjoy their long-awaited spring break. 

Last week, the stakes were at their highest with region positioning on the line. With just a few games left now, the standings are almost locked with most teams only able to move up or down one spot. 

There were several record-breaking and milestone performances last week on the girls side. On the boys side, a 5A District 4 champion was crowned.

Chapin’s girls team picked up a win against Dutch Fork to stay undefeated in the region. The team also defeated Hilton Head Island in a non-region contest. The team had two players cross impressive career landmarks in the process. 

During their senior night contest against Dutch Fork, seniors Ava-Claire Collins and Jules Brown nailed the net for milestone shots. Brown scored her 100th career goal, and Collins secured her 200th goal.

Sitting in second in the region two games back, Lexington swept its competition last week to secure separation between it and the team in third. The Wildcats beat third-place River Bluff, giving the Gators their third region loss, and then beat White Knoll 24-0 to cap it off. 

Lexington beat River Bluff 11-9 to give the Wildcats a much-needed edge over the Gators in the standings. Lexington’s win secured a series sweep and put the Wildcats a game above the Gators. 

In that win, Lily Sundell and Izzy Saville led the Wildcats to victory. Sundell had 3 goals, one assist, four ground balls and seven draw controls. She also added seven scooped ground balls, which tied a single-game school record. 

Saville scored five goals, three assists and a recovered ground ball to inch closer to the school’s record book. In the next game, she scored four goals and got three ground balls to become the school’s career leader in both categories. 

River Bluff bounced back from the Lexington loss with a 14-2 win over Aiken. But the team ended on a loss with a non-region game against Riverside. 

Dutch Fork split its two contests, beating White Knoll and losing to Chapin. The Timberwolves are still seeking a region win and have just one chance left to get it. The team plays Chapin April 8 in its season finale. 

The boys region title was claimed last week when Lexington beat White Knoll on March 28. It was the Wildcats’ first region title win since the 2021 season after finishing third in 2022 and second last year. 

The team that won last year, Chapin, sits second and a game above 3-3 Dutch Fork. The Eagles barely beat the Silver Foxes last week, winning 12-11 on the road after eight combined goals from seniors Owen Salazar and Ethan Hedge. 

Dutch Fork put up a good fight despite seven goals from their own star senior, Carter Hunt. The game before that, the team handled White Knoll 24-1 in a game where 10 different players scored and five had hat tricks. 

The Silver Foxes and fourth-place River Bluff will meet early next week to play before the team finishes the season against the champs. 

There is little action this week with most teams on hiatus as players either travel or take time off for spring break. Though, a few will compete in tournaments that took place early this week or will continue through Friday. Regular region action resumes early next week, and then it’s on to playoffs. 

Big Performances

Izzy Saville had a record-breaking week for Lexington, becoming the program’s all-time leader in goals and ground balls. She scored nine goals and scooped five ground balls in two games. 

Brooke Holmes scored six goals and added two assists, four ground balls and four draws won for Chapin against Hilton Head Island.

Owen Salazar helped Chapin slip past Dutch Fork, providing five goals and an assist for the Eagles in their 12-11 win. 

Jackson Register scored two goals along with an assist and five ground balls to help River Bluff defeat Aiken. 

Carter Hunt scored seven of Dutch Fork’s 11 goals in the loss to Chapin
