The Catch-up: Golf tournament to raise money for police non-profit, more

An event to help fund the Lexington Police Department Foundation, a non-profit, is happening on Monday, April 29. 

The 6th Annual Lexington Police Department Golf Tournament will take place at the Golden Hills Golf & Country Club. 

According to a release from the department, the foundation “is used within our agency to support our officers and department and further our community-focused programs.”

Team entries are currently being accepted and a maximum of 25 four-player teams are allowed. Team entry is $400 per four players and this includes a catered breakfast and lunch, raffle prizes, and several on-course challenges with prizes, and according to the release, tournament winners will receive individual trophies. 

Mulligan packages will also be offered for purchase at tournament sign-in the day of the event.

“As the golf tournament approaches, team entries are being accepted, and the Lexington Police Department is seeking local corporate and business sponsorships,” according to the release. “Monetary donations are welcome, and businesses can also donate items for player gift bags and raffle prizes.”

Lexington veteran receives ‘Living Legend’ proclamation

A Lexington local has received a “Living Legend” proclamation for her service in Vietnam. 

This proclamation comes from The Women in Military Service for America Memorial Foundation in Washington, DC.

Red Cross Recreational Worker Miriam Rhame Medley was celebrated on March 14 in the presence of loved ones and South Carolina Ambassadors Shelly Langston, U.S. Navy Veteran, Barb Kucharczyk, U.S. Air Force, retired Lt. Colonel, and Denise Scarboro, U.S. Army, Retired Chief Warrant Officer 5, according to a release from the Women In Military Service For America Memorial Foundation. 

“The mission of the Military Women's Memorial is to honor women's contributions to the defense of our nation and to inspire the next generation of leaders through the examples of those who have paved the way,” according to the release. “The Military Women's Memorial also honors women in the ‘WE ALSO SERVED’ categories which includes those who served overseas during conflicts in direct support of the military in organizations such as the Red Cross, USO, Special Services, Salvation Army.”

Here’s a little of her history as detailed in the release: 

“Miriam was a member of the American Red Cross Clubmobile Program. Miriam arrived in Saigon June of 1966. She was transferred to An Khe, the home of the 1st Cavalry Airmobile Division. Miriam provided recreational programs and activities to military recreation centers and mess halls. Miriam spent half of her assignment in Vietnam at Cam Ranh Bay Air Base with the 12th Combat Support Group and 12thTactical Fighter Wing. At An Khe, her time was divided between the recreation center at CamRanhBayand outposts reached only by helicopter. The Red Cross women led the men in activities, programs, and conversation. Red Cross Recreation worker Miriam Medley brought a 'touch of home' to the men who were in isolated areas and far from America. Miriam worked at the 93rd Evacuation Hospital inLong Binh and with the 29th Evacuation Hospital in Binh Thuy. After she left Vietnam, Miriam served in the Philippines at Subic Bay Naval Hospital with the Red Cross as a Hospital Field Director from 1971 to 1973.”
