The Catch-Up: Shaq to DJ at Cayce electronic music festival

Posted

Shaquille O'Neal will be in Cayce come March.

To DJ.

That’s real news from the Hidden City Music Festival, the electronic music extravaganza that will take over the Historic Columbia Speedway for a third-straight year March 30, as the ubiquitous former basketball big man, Papa Johns “Shaq-a-Roni” slinger and “Inside the NBA” host will be in town to perform as Diesel, his DJ sobriquet.

“Beyond his athletic prowess, Shaq has transitioned into becoming one of the greatest entertainers globally,” the Hidden City website enthuses. “His larger-than-life personality and formidable athleticism have garnered him widespread admiration and one of the most devoted fan bases in both sports and entertainment. The Hall of Famer had his introduction to electronic dance music at TomorrowWorld in 2014, a pivotal moment that forever changed his life as he was exposed to renowned DJs like Steve Aoki and Skrillex.”

Naturally, the oddity of having one of basketball history’s best and most boisterous talents coming to Cayce has grabbed the bulk of local attention since Hidden City revealed its lineup last week, but the festival continues to bring in impressive talent for those who dig EDM.

Popular artists Acraze, Pickuplines, Name Unknown, and Vyce Bloom will also play the festival, which you can find out more about at hiddencitymusicfestival.com.

Road work in progress around Lexington FBI headquarters

The FBI has a new local headquarters in Lexington, and the town is shifting traffic as a result.

The town recently sent transportation crews out to work on “removing the center median located on Whiteford Way at Sunset Blvd. in preparation for a new traffic pattern,” the town posted to Facebook. “

“The new pattern will consist of dual left turn lanes and a dedicated right turn lane, improving signal efficiencies at this location. This change will occur as soon as the weather permits,” it detailed

“This work is part of a larger cooperative effort between the Town, Lexington County and the private developer of the FBI building site located behind Lowe’s Home Improvement store.  Upon completion of the Town’s work, the developer will begin the construction of a right turn lane along Sunset Blvd westbound onto Whiteford Way and driveway modifications for Circle K and Moseley’s.”

The post goes on to note that the county’s Public Works has further plans to replace some curb sections along Whiteford Way at the intersection “to address the persistent drainage issues in this area. “Upon its completion, new asphalt and permanent line striping will be installed.”

Shelter hosts winter adoption event

Winter is a rough time for animals and animal shelters.

Last fall, the Lexington County Animal Shelter detailed to the Chronicle the uptick in surrendered animals that follows the holidays each year, as people who maybe didn’t think hard enough about whether they could handle an animal when getting one for a present tend to give them up by the end of January or the beginning of February.

This puts pressure on already severe overcrowding issues, and the shelter only has so much space to keep animals safe from the winter chill.

Which is why, if you are someone who wants and has the ability to care for an animal, now is a great time to consider adopting.

And Lexington County Animal Services has a deal for you with its Winter Snuggle Buddy Adoption Event.

Adoption fees will be waived during the event, which continues through Feb. 3, and the first 10 adoptions will receive a gift as a “thank you.”
