Open carry bill gains supporters, critics

State lawmakers may give some gun owners the right to openly carry their weapons.
South Carolina is among 5 states without such a law.
House Bill 3094 has law enforcement and others concerned about how to enforce it if it becomes law.
Lexington County Rep. RJ May said, the bill "does little to restore South Carolinians' 2nd Amendment rights.
"3094 would still force law-abiding citizens to petition the government and pay a fee before they can protect themselves and their families.
"If the legislature was serious, they would pass Constitutional Carry and recognize the God-given right of law abiding citizens to be armed."
We asked other county legislative delegation members but only May responded.
67 lawmakers reportedly support the bill.
“This is not creating the wild west," said National Rifle Association Representative DJ Spiker.
“Open Carry with Training Act” applies to those with concealed carry permits, he said.
It allows open carry wherever a gun owner is permitted to carry a concealed weapon.
“What we are asking is for you to allow concealed carry holders to take off their coats,” Spiker said.
“Open carry with or without training is a mistake,” Arm in Arm representative Meghan Trezies said.
She said her group advocates for all who support responsible gun ownership.
“The training aspect of this bill is an illusion," she said.
Dr. Anne Andrews of Moms Demand Action told lawmakers that seeing people openly carrying weapons can traumatize the survivors of gun violence.
