2019 NIKE PALMETTO CUP (Final Day) - Cardinal Newman, Nansemond River claim tournament titles

Gilbert boys places 3rd in Silver Division

The final day of the Nike Palmetto Cup witnessed another nationally-ranked team upended in Chronicle Country.

Cardinal Newman defeated Clover 2-1 in a shootout to claim the boys’ Gold Division championship at Palmetto Heath Fields at Saluda Shoals Park. In handing the Eagles (21-1), ranked 2nd in the latest USA Today High School Sports Super Expert Top 25 rankings their first loss of the season, the Cardinals outscored them 5-4 on penalty kicks.

Clover joins a list which includes former number-one teams Wando and Dutch Fork to fall in the Midlands. The Warriors saw their state-record 58-game winning streak fall at the hands of the Silver Foxes 4-3 in the final of the Capital City Cup at River Bluff High School on Feb. 24

After replacing Wando in the top spot, Dutch Fork was defeated 2-1 in overtime by Lexington in a March 19 Region 5-5A road match.

The boys’ soccer Silver Division was won by visiting Nansemond River (Va.) over North Augusta 2-1.

A non-semifinal or final contest also played Wednesday saw Gilbert post a 4-0 shutout win over Highway 1 rival Batesburg-Leesville. The 2-time Region 5-3A champion Indians finished the Cup with a 3-0-1 mark and 3rd place in the Silver Division.

Pinewood Prep won the girls division with a 4-0 record. It was followed by Greenbrier (Ga) and Gray Collegiate.
