Two Lexington County restaurants received a C grade, the lowest Food Grade given out by the state Department of Health and Environmental Control, during the month of January.

2 Lexington County restaurants received C grades in January

Two Lexington County restaurants received a C grade, the lowest Food Grade given out by the state Department of Health and Environmental Control, during the month of January.

Cayce’s Reggae Grill, located at 901 Holland Ave., received a B on a routine inspection conducted Jan. 3. It was downgraded to a C on a follow-up inspection conducted Jan. 13.

The restaurant was able to improve to an A after a follow-up conducted Jan. 17 

The report from Jan. 13 (when Reggae Grill received a score of 94%) noted improper cooling temperatures and cooling methods, detailing a “pot more than four inches deep of rice in reach-in cooler not properly cooling,” a “pan of mac and cheese stacked and covered not properly cooling in reach-in” and a “covered pan of chicken in reach-in not properly cooling.”

Two of the violations having to do with holding temperatures were noted as uncorrected violations from the previous inspection.

No violations were recorded on the Jan. 17 follow-up when the restaurant was given a score of 100%.

Sum Ming Chinese, located at 7509 St Andrews Rd. in Irmo, received a C (73%) after a routine inspection conducted Jan. 4 before being upgraded to an A (99%) after a follow-up inspection conducted Jan. 11.

The report from Jan. 4 noted improper cleaning procedures, observing “employees rinsing hands in place of adequate washing” and “employees not washing hands between points of contamination.”

Also noted on the C inspection were improper prevention of contamination from hands, improper handling of raw foods and “dishes and equipment stored as clean with food matter build-up.”

One violation for improper washing of fruit and vegetables was recorded during the Jan. 11 inspection.
