There are only three weeks left in the 2025 high school football regular season, and teams from Lexington County are scrambling for wins as the playoffs draw close.
Last week, there were 10 games, featuring 14 of the 15 Lexington County football teams. Swansea was the only team on a bye and will come off looking to maintain its unbeaten record.
Here are some of the biggest storylines from week 7 of Lexington County high school football.
Winning teams were lighting up the scoreboard all night in games around the county.
Of the 10 games played, all 10 winners scored at least 20 points and six scored more than 40. Lexington County was not always on the positive side of these games, though, as three outside teams won games and scored big.
Gray Collegiate scored the most points, dropping 62 on Airport. The War Eagles held the Eagles to seven points in a dominant display.
Irmo scored 56 points in its 42-point win over River Bluff. It was the Yellow Jackets’ third 50-plus-point game this season. The team had at least 35 points in all of its wins thus far.
Strom Thurmond and Saluda also scored in the 50s, beating local teams American Leadership and Pelion.
Batesburg-Leesville beat Ninety Six 49-14 for the Panthers’ fourth win this season. Dutch Fork beat White Knoll 41-24 after scoring three unanswered touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
Lexington scored 29 in a win over Chapin. Gilbert held on to beat Midland Valley 21-14.
Brookland-Cayce notched a one-point win over Aiken, 20-19. Orangeburg Prep beat Lexington’s Northside Christian 28-15.
With three games left in the regular season, the region standings are starting to shape up and the real contenders are starting to emerge.
A few local teams are in a good position down the stretch to contend for a top spot in the standings and maybe even a region title.
Entering this week, eight teams are in first or within a game of first place.
Winning region games is crucial as they determine a team’s seeding in the playoffs. The higher the placement, the higher the seed and more home playoff games.
Dutch Fork and Irmo are tied at (2-0) for first in 5A Region 4. The two will play in the season finale for the second year in a row. Lexington and White Knoll are a game behind them at (1-1). Chapin and River Bluff sit at the bottom with (0-2) region records.
Gray Collegiate holds a one-game advantage over North Augusta in the 4A Region 4 standings. The War Eagles won the head-to-head earlier this season. Gilbert and Brookland-Cayce are behind them with two other teams holding (2-2) records. Airport is at the bottom of the conference with a (0-4) record.
In 3A Region 4, Swansea is coming off a bye (1-0) in region play. The Tigers are behind (2-0) Newberry with games against (1-1) Silver Bluff, (0-1) Fox Creek and (2-0) Newberry left to go.
Batesburg-Leesville and Pelion are (1-1) and a game behind Saluda and Strom Thurmond in 2A Region 2. American Leadership is winless at the bottom of the standings.
Lexington County’s lone SCISA team, Northside Christian, is (0-2) in its region.
Two local teams are still searching for their first victory.
Airport and Chapin are a combined (0-14) this season and are running out of time to get in the win column.
It’s been a rough season on both sides of the ball for both teams. Chapin has been outscored 259-55 this season, and Airport has had an even tougher time, getting outscored 339-63.
Each team has been shut out twice this season and has multiple losses by three or more possessions. Both have had their chances to earn wins with a couple of close games, but fell short.
Chapin and Airport have three games left apiece on the year. They will have opportunities, but it will be an uphill battle against quality opponents.
Airport has games left against North Augusta, Gilbert and Brookland-Cayce. The Eagles will be on the road against North Augusta and Gilbert, two of the top four teams in the region.
Chapin still has River Bluff, Irmo and White Knoll on its schedule. All three of those teams are formidable opponents, with Irmo being one of the last undefeated teams in the state.
A winless season would be both teams' worst year in decades.
Amire White ran for almost 200 yards and three touchdowns for Irmo in a win over River Bluff.
Corey Gleaton had an offensive and defensive touchdown in Gray Collegiate’s victory over Airport.
Bennett Plane caught three touchdowns for Brookland-Cayce in a victory over Aiken.
Quintin Wilson scored three touchdowns in Dutch Fork’s win over White Knoll.
Markel Byrd had two rushing touchdowns for Lexington in a win over Chapin.
