7 Lexington County softball teams look to keep their seasons alive in 2nd week of softball playoffs

The softball postseason will continue this week for seven teams in Lexington County. These teams avoided elimination and defeated their opponents last week to inch closer to a district championship.

The field is guaranteed to shrink this week as a few local teams can afford no more losses from now until the upper and lower state rounds.

Three teams entered this week with a spot in their district title game secured already. The other four will have to earn it by winning an elimination game first.

Lexington and Dutch Fork had to play each other to move on to the district title round. The Wildcats and Silver Foxes both suffered losses to Dorman last week, putting them on the verge of elimination.

Dutch Fork already survived one elimination game thanks to a 5-1 win over Wade Hampton.

Lexington fell into the elimination bracket after a third-round 6-5 loss against Dorman. The Wildcats did their best to claw back in that game, scoring all five of their runs in the final three innings.

The Wildcats defeated the Silver Foxes 12-2 in Tuesday's elimination game. Lexington will now get a shot at revenge against Dorman.

In the 5A Division II bracket, Chapin was eliminated by North Myrtle Beach, leaving no local teams left in that race.

Three of the county’s four 4A teams are still in contention. Gray Collegiate and Gilbert have already secured a spot in their district bracket’s championship game. Airport is not far behind with an elimination game against the loser of the May River and Colleton County game standing in its way of the district championship match.

The War Eagles won their district Tuesday night, securing their spot in the next bracket without dropping a game.

Pelion is the lone 2A team in contention for a state title. The Panthers had a perfect week last week, winning both of their games by multiple runs. Pelion is scheduled to play the winner of High Point and Mid-Carolina in the district title match.

Swansea, the county’s only 3A team, was eliminated after losing its first two games.

River Bluff won its first-round game before dropping its next two contests and being eliminated. Same goes for White Knoll.

The upper and lower state championship rounds are slated to begin at the end of this week in some classifications and early next week in others.

The softball state championships will follow the week after.
