Baseball postseason action continues this week for nine teams in Lexington County.
Following a jam-packed week of competition, many Lexington County teams advanced through their district bracket and got a step closer to the upper and lower state rounds.
One team has already secured its district’s championship. Three more will be playing in the final district game this week, looking to punch their ticket to the next bracket. Teams in the 5A brackets have a few more games to get through before reaching the district final.
Airport secured its spot in the 4A lower state bracket after an impressive week of winning. The Eagles advanced through their district bracket without a loss, beating region rival Gray Collegiate and May River twice.
Gilbert is looking to join their cross-county foe in the lower state bracket with a win in their district championship. The Indians beat North Augusta on Tuesday to force a winner-take-all game two.
Gilbert must beat North Augusta twice to advance after being upset in its first game against Aiken.
Swansea and Batesburg-Leesville were also set to play in their district bracket championship before the weather changed the schedule. The Tigers survived elimination in the 3A playoffs, beating Waccamaw in a do-or-die game. Batesburg-Leesville has gone through its 2A district bracket unbeaten.
Both teams were able to take the field on Tuesday. Swansea's season came to an end with a loss against Hannahan. The Panthers will move off after winning their district.
While the 2A, 3A and 4A playoffs start their lower and upper state rounds, the two 5A divisions are playing catch-up.
A handful of Lexington County teams are still in contention in the 5A brackets. Lexington and Dutch Fork remain in contention in their district bracket in the 5A Division I playoffs. All three 5A Division II teams are still in.
White Knoll and Irmo began the week facing elimination, having already lost one game. White Knoll was the only 5A team playing Tuesday night. The Timberwolves lost to North Myrtle Beach, ending their season.
Chapin has yet to lose a game but is scheduled to play Lucy Beckham early this week. The winner of that game advances to the next round, while the loser heads to the elimination bracket.
Dutch Fork began the week facing elimination with a game against Byrnes on the schedule. The winner of that game will play the loser of the Blythewood and J.L. Mann game in the second elimination contest.
Lexington is not facing elimination yet, winning its first-round game against Boiling Springs. The Wildcats were scheduled to play Dorman in the second round for a guaranteed spot in the district championship.
Should Lexington lose, the team will head to the elimination bracket and play the winner of the Mauldin and Boiling Springs game.
After this week, expect to see even fewer Lexington County teams in the field. Most teams can’t afford another loss in the district brackets, while others have a game of breathing room.
If a few more teams can make it to the next bracket, they will get a reset as they compete for an upper or lower state championship. Upper and lower state rounds are set to begin this weekend in 4A, 3A and 2A and next week in the two 5A divisions.
The baseball state championships will take place the following weekend and be a best-of-three series between each classification’s upper and lower state champions.
