The final week of the American Legion baseball season was this week as Lexington County’s teams look to end the year in the win column.
Two of the area’s three teams are still in contention for the top spot in their league and the playoffs. Lexington Post 7 and West Columbia Post 79 began this week tied in the standings and still have a delayed game against each other to finish up.
Both teams are half a game back from the current league leader, Richland. Lexington County’s third team, Chapin/Newberry Post 193/24, can help its companions by beating Richland in their season series this week.
Chapin/Newberry started the week on a three game win-streak after beating Winnsboro in their series last week. Those were the first league wins for Chapin/Newberry this season. They are out of postseason contention, but can still play spoiler and finish on a high note.
West Columbia controls its own destiny with two games left on the schedule. Post 79 has matchups against both Lexington and Richland, and a win in both would propel the team into first place.
Post 79 has a win and a loss against both teams, meaning whoever wins their final meetings gets the tiebreaker. Last week, West Columbia beat Richland 4-0 in game one of their series before dropping game two 6-3.
West Columbia and Lexington played in June before weather delayed game two of their series. Lexington led 6-1 before the thunder struck and paused action. Post 79 will have to make a comeback if it wants to win the game.
Aside from its game against West Columbia, Lexington will also finish its delayed game against Winnsboro. Post 7 trailed that game 1-0 before play was halted.
Following the conclusion of the regular season, each league's top three teams come together for the playoffs.
Lexington, West Columbia and Richland have already locked down the top three spots in their league. The order in which they’ll finish is still to be determined.
