High school baseball and softball continued last week as many teams from Lexington County added wins during an action-packed slate of games.
Last week was full of big performances from the plate and the mound as some of the area's brightest stars willed their teams to victory. There were walk-offs and shutouts throughout the week that made it one of the most exciting so far this season.
On the baseball field, things are really heating up with key contests coming up on the schedule. The region season is rolling along, and a few teams are starting to separate themselves from their conference mates.
Teams like River Bluff, Gilbert and Swansea are playing some of their best baseball. Those three enter this week a combined 34-3 overall and sit near the top of their conference standings.
The Gators had an exciting week, earning wins over Irmo and Mid-Carolina. All three contests were close, with the Gators' largest win of the week coming by just two runs.
Banks Alexander was the hero in those games, hitting the walk-off home run in the second game versus Irmo. He also recorded the game's only RBI in a 1-0 victory over Mid-Carolina.
Swansea is coming off a two-game series against Silver Bluff. It was a tale of two games as the first match was extremely close before the Tigers dominated game two. In the second match,
Kendall Wright came up clutch both on the field and from the batter’s box. He bombed a grand slam to the stands while also pitching five full innings. He gave up just four hits and no runs as the Tigers ran away with a 13-0 mercy rule win.
Gilbert remained the top team in their region after a series win over Midland Valley. The Indians ended the week with a non-region win over Hammond.
A handful of other teams are also playing great ball and looking to stay in contention as the season progresses.
Dutch Fork and Lexington were only a game back from River Bluff entering this week. One team will take an edge over the other this week as the two are scheduled to play their season series.
Lexington won three of the four meetings between the two last season, but Dutch Fork will look to flip the script this year.
Airport, Gray Collegiate and Brookland-Cayce join Gilbert as the top-four teams from their region coming into the week. Airport is the closest team in contention with Gilbert and will have the chance to jump ahead when the two meet this week.
On the softball field, a few teams flexed their muscles with high-scoring wins against formidable competition.
Gilbert, Gray Collegiate and Lexington come into the week playing at a high level.
The Wildcats have a slight edge in the region race after a pair of dominant wins over Dutch Fork and White Knoll. The team won both contests by a combined score of 27-3 to improve to 4-0 in conference play.
Lexington concluded last week with a few games while participating in the SwampFox Invitational. Livi Warren had herself a game in the team’s last outing of the tournament, hitting two home runs for five RBIs.
The Wildcats will end the season by playing their last six region games. Lexington is seeking to reclaim the region title after its three-year streak was snapped last season.
Gray and Gilbert have proven themselves as two heavyweight hitters in the same region.
Only one team can end the season in first place and earn top seeding in the playoffs. The War Eagles and Indians will not play each other until the final region series of the season.
Those meetings could dictate the region champion, depending on how the rest of the season plays out.
While those are just some of the teams playing at a high level midway through the baseball and softball seasons, plenty of others have had their moments and can realistically compete down the stretch.
The 2025 high school baseball and softball season ends on May 3. Playoff action is set to begin a few days after and last through the month.
Livi Warren hit two home runs and had five RBIs in Lexington’s win over Dorman.
Kendall Wright hit a grand slam and pitched for five innings in a 13-0 Swansea win over the Silver Bluff baseball team.
Mackenzie Sease pitched five perfect innings with 12 strikeouts in Gray Collegiate’s mercy rule win over South Aiken.
Grayson Crim drove in six runs in Northside Christian’s 24-1 win over Heathwood Hall after hitting a home run to center field and a double.
Abigail Pouliot recorded five RBIs after hitting a triple and a home run to help lift Dutch Fork over River Bluff.
Walker Godwin hit a grand slam in River Bluff’s 12-0 shutout win over Mid-Carolina.
